Mai Sanchez (b. 1975, Philippines) – UK-based Filipino artist
Materials: Capiz shells, bamboo, hessian fabric, dowels, jute strings, cotton cords, papier mâché, and construction offcuts.
Repetition. Pattern. Precision.
This is the quiet discipline at the heart of my sculptural practice — a practice shaped by memory, silence, and control.
My work explores structured visual rhythm — a deliberate language of repetition, discipline, and lived experience. I often begin by visualising patterns within a self-imposed 50×100 cm frame lined with hessian. However, I also experiment with scale and spatial variation, as seen in larger sculptural forms, such as the bamboo installation. My process is ritualistic: I sketch, measure, and construct, guided by memory and a tape measure. It’s this precision that brings care and meaning to each piece.
I work with natural and organic materials — Capiz shells, bamboo, jute, hessian, dowels, cotton cord, papier-mâché, and construction offcuts. Occasionally, I incorporate functional elements, such as plumbing rings or metal sheets, for both their structural integrity and symbolic repetition. Through this material language, I rebuild narratives of memory and method, crafting a healing architecture shaped by hand and intent.
